Why HP Laptop Plugged in Not Charging- Diagnose with Fixes

This problem can be caused by several issues, including the performance of the hp laptop batteries, AC adapter, battery driver, even the power supply that you are plugging your laptop into.

At first, take a look at the possible reasons behind plugged in, not charging – HP issue

Possible Reasons for Not ChargingFixes Must Try
Problem in Power SourceEnsure the complete power source
AC Adapter ProblemCheck cables and adapter
    Battery ProblemReset battery or replace
    Driver IssueUpdate battery driver
    BIOS problemUpdate BIOS settings

However, this part will discuss all those possible issues that might have affected your laptop performance and how to resolve it.

    1. Power Issue

While your laptop battery is not charging, the first and foremost thing you should do is, check the power connection cables, surge protector, plug point, etc. Do as follows if you can match,

    • In case the cables are damaged, replace them with a new one. Your laptop cables may damage due to weather or insects.
    • If you always use a surge protector, try plugging your laptop into the wall socket.
    • If your laptop is not yet charging while plugged in a wall socket, then the problem might not be with your laptop.

    2. The AC Adapter

Laptops generally come with an AC adapter provided by the company. An AC adapter converts the alternating current to the direct to protect your device from sudden voltage changes.

    • If your laptop battery is not charging due to the AC adapter, try a new one.
    • Usually, the genuine company adapter provided by the company ensures better service than others. In case you have already changed the genuine one, it may not suit very well.

    3. Battery Issue

Hp laptop batteries generally do not break down so fast until you are a 24/7 user or always keep your laptop plugged in.

Battery damage is a vital issue for any laptop as it can affect the device’s internal parts and ultimately damage the entire laptop. Power reset is the best solution for battery issues,

    1. Turn off your laptop.
    2. Remove the battery (if removable).
    3. Remove all the power connections.
    4. Hold the power button.
    5. After 15 seconds, release.
    6. Insert the battery.
    7. Reconnect power cables.
    8. Turn on your laptop and check the charging status.

    4. Driver Update Problem

This plugged-in but not charging issue may arise if you use the wrong driver for your laptop battery. You can follow either,

    • Update your battery driver. This process differs depending on the windows version you are using.
    • You can also install an auto-updating application if you are struggling to do it manually.

We have discussed the manual driver updating process in a separate section of this article for the windows 10 and windows 7 versions.

    5. Laptop BIOS Issue

Now, this method is a complicated one. So don’t try it if you are new to it. Rather than call an expert. However, a bit of carelessness can mess up the entire laptop setup.

Start with simply updating your BIOS from the HP official website.

However, the methods we have mentioned above may differ for different windows versions, basically when it’s the driver updating issue. We are discussing Windows 10 and 7.

HP Laptop Plugged in Not Charging Windows 10

In most cases, device driver failure in Windows can cause such not charging problem. Here is how you can update your battery driver on windows 10,

    1. Open the run dialog box.
    2. Enter devmgmt.mgmt.
    3. Double click batteries.
    4. Select update.
    5. Select search automatically.

Confirm your laptop system is up to date before proceeding.

HP Laptop Plugged in Not Charging Windows 7

The method is almost the same as the windows 10 version. You will find similar dialog boxes and options in just a different route. Here is how you do the driver updating for windows 7,

    1. Open the run dialog box as before.
    2. Expand the Batteries category.
    3. Right-click on “Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery.”
    4. Select update driver software.

Still, your problem is not fixed? Then, you need a battery replacement. Try to charge by connecting another battery. If that fixes the issue, you have to replace your battery.

    Final Words

If you have made up to this far, then simply check out which one is bothering your laptop. You might even realize how simple or complex the problem is to resolve and then take your decision to either take the help of a service center or solve it at home.

All the 5 methods we have mentioned in this article are applicable for any HP laptop plugged in not charging issues.

If none of them is working for your hp laptop, we suggest you to contacting a hp customer service center and get your laptop serviced.
