You are planning to upgrade your computer, but you do not know what power supply you have. Without an efficient power supply, your PC system will not work properly. So, now wondering how to see what power supply I have?  Check the sticker on your PSU or you can check from the web also.

In this article, we will tell you a few ways to check your power supply. This step-by-step guide will help to find out more about what power supply you have so that you can replace your PSU without any worries.

How to See What Power Supply do I Have

There are mainly three ways you can check your PC’s power supply. I will explain all of them. The first two methods are quite easy. But if you still cannot find your PSU information from these methods, you have to follow the third method, which may get a little bit tricky.

So let us see how you can check your PSU:

Method 1: Checking the Manufacturer’s Website

This method works for pre-built PCs. If you have bought a computer, you can check the manufacturer’s website to know about your PC’s power supply.

You just have to know the model number of your computer. Then, go to the manufacturer’s official website and search for the model.

You will see the product page of your computer on the website. There, in the specification and component section, you will find the details of your PC’s PSU.

You will see the PSU model, input voltage, DC output, max load capacity, total power, and other information.

All this information is necessary to buy a new one to run your system. The upgrades have to be compatible with the PSU.

Method 2: Information on the PSU Box

If you have built the PC on your own, then you probably have the PSU box somewhere. Thus, learning about the power supply will become quite simple.

On the side of the PSU box, you will find the PSU model number, rating, and specifications, the same as the website page.

The PSU must have a manual inside the box as well. Read the manual carefully to understand the full capacity of the PSU. You will find instructions on how to install the PSU and how different parts of the PSU work.

It is easy to lose the PSU box somehow. So, for future reference, you should note the details of the PSU or keep a photo on your phone.

Method 3: Check the Label of the PSU

But what if you cannot find out the PSU information from these simple methods? You may not have bought a pre-made PC, or you lost the PSU box. Fortunately, there is a third method of checking the PSU.

This time, check the label sticker on the PSU, which is inside the CPU. Thus, you have to take off the case of the CPU. Now, do not get panicked. You will learn how to get to your PSU with some easy steps.

    1. First, you have to make sure you have turned off your computer properly. Then unplug all the cables from the electricity. You surely don’t want to get electrocuted while you are taking off the CPU casing.
    2. Next, unplug the cables of the monitor, keyboard, and all other devices from the CPU. Otherwise, it is difficult to remove the casing.
    3. Now, you need a screwdriver that is the correct size for the CPU’s case screws. Normally, a midrange size screwdriver can do the job.
    4. When you are working on your CPU, try to work on a clean wooded surface. Lay down the CPU and use the screwdriver to remove the screws from the casing.
    5. Secure the screws in a safe place so that they do not get lost. Now, cautiously remove the casing.
    6. After that, finding the power supply should be easy. It is usually located close to the power cords of the CPU. There you will have the information about the power supply.
    7. However, some PSU models have their labels on the bottom, not on the side. In this case, you have to remove the PSU from the CPU. Check the bottom of the PSU for the sticker.

Since opening the casing of your computer is bothersome, it is better you save the PSU information. Then you do not have to go through this process again. You can save the PSU model number, efficiency rating, max output, wattage, and some other information.

After learning the information, make sure to reassemble your CPU. If you have removed the PSU, put it back in the right place. Then put the casing back on the CPU and use the screwdriver to secure the screws. Do not forget to plug all the cables in the right place.

If you want more information about the components used in the PSU, you can use the model number to Google it.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How Do I Know What Power Supply I Need For My PC?

The efficiency of your PC depends greatly on the power supply. To find the best PSU for your computer, you have to add up amps of all the PC components like the CUP, GPU, RAM, SSD, HD, etc. Then, multiply the amount by the total amount of volts of all the components. This way, you will find the wattage power for the PSU.

How Do I Know If My Power Supply Is Bad?

If your computer does not turn on, your PSU may have gone bad. To check, you can see the fan of the PSU. The fan and LED light will not work if the PSU is damaged. The PC may also crash randomly and make irritating noise.

What Happens If Power Supply Is Not Enough For Graphic Card?

When the PSU fails to provide enough power to the graphics, the video and image quality suffer the most. The screen may turn blue in places. Besides, the monitor can also get completely blank. Other problems include random crashing of the PC.

    Conclusion

After reading this article, hopefully, you are no longer thinking, how to see what power supply I have.

The power supply of the computer is as important as the motherboard of your computer. If you want your PC to run efficiently, you must buy a PSU that supplies the right amount of power to all the PC components.
