Used cars. They can often be valuable investments, and second-hand models offer a lot of benefits. However, they can also be risky choices, if you should end up in a sticky situation. In line with this, today, we’re briefly considering the six main steps you should carry out when buying used. In turn, this should make it a little easier to find the right vehicle for your needs.

Six Key Steps to Carry Out When Buying Used

With second-hand cars often being a versatile investment, it’s no surprise that so many are bought and sold each year. Alas, not all ads for used cars are genuine. Following this thought, taking precautions to protect yourself as a buyer is integral.

Consider What You Need from Your Used Car

First, make sure you’ve considered what you need from your used car. Indeed, everyone’s requirements are different, and keeping this in mind is highly important to make sure that you choose correctly. Fortunately, a shortlist of the key traits your chosen car needs to have is often enough to inform this decision.

Search for Used Cars Online and In Person

There are several ways to find a second-hand bargain, both online and in person. A lot of online listings are made by individuals; meanwhile, visiting dealerships in person is another option. Online listings typically offer a greater range of selection and choice. However, buying in person from a dealer can potentially be a safer and more secure option.

    Ask for More Photos

If you’re buying online, once you’ve picked out a vehicle you like, be sure to ask for extra photos. Even if it doesn’t seem like you need them, it’s always worth checking; this simple step can help verify the seller is genuine. After all, if the seller is fraudulent and doesn’t own the car, getting specific photos will be very difficult.

    Run a Car History Check

You’re happy the car is genuine. One final step: always check car history to verify the seller’s claims. These tools are effortless to run with just the number plate alone, and they could save you from buying a potentially fraudulent or even stolen vehicle. Why take a risk with your money?

    View the Car in Person

Getting extra pictures is naturally important; however, viewing the car in person is still the gold standard. Thus, once you’re satisfied the seller seems genuine, visit the car yourself to get a closer look. Check for scratches and dents that could indicate signs of previous damage; don’t forget, modern repair work can do wonders. In addition, try to view the car running if possible. If the seller’s unhappy with a test drive, at least ask them to show you it is running.

When viewing the vehicle in person, always check the V5 too. If the seller doesn’t have it to hand, don’t take the chance, even if they’re supposedly waiting on a replacement.

    Final Thoughts

If you are considering a second-hand car purchase, ensuring you are making an informed choice is vital. After all, not all listings are genuine. And, while we all like to hope that the car we’ve found will be the real deal, it’s not guaranteed. So, be sure to take some steps to ensure that your purchase is genuine; it only takes a little time, but it can make a lot of difference. You can start by checking trusted platforms like HotDeals to spot red flags early and avoid scams.
